Glittering evening at Wealden House

May 12, 2004 -- Also attending were the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Christine Mainstone; her husband, Mr Bob Mainstone and Cllr David Heasman, former Town Mayor, whose family has a long-standing connection with Wealden House, going back to the early part of the last century. Representatives from the arts in Sussex were also present, including Hy Money, the celebrated photographer who will be exhibiting her work at Wealden House in June.

The party spilled out of the renovated panelled drawing room onto the terrace and newly restored gardens.

Michael Todd, a prominent hair stylist in the London and home counties area, is the principal of Phase 2 in its new home in Wealden House. He believes in training his own staff in the real art and craft of cutting and styling and his first two student apprentices are Vicky Wells & Zoe Etherington. However, Michael is still looking for good sytlists to join the team. Those interested can call Phase 2 on 01342 305201.

"This is the first of a number of official openings at Wealden House. We are working very hard to complete the health and beauty day spa to complement Phase 2 Hairdressing and hope it will be ready for its official opening in the coming months," said Mauro Calcioli, Executive Director of Wealden House and of Wealden House Life Improvement Centre (formerly the Calcioli Field Practice).

Before the event, the Town Mayor was whisked into the salon where Michael and his team began her cut and finish and she became the first official client of the salon. By the time she emerged with her hair looking a million dollars, all the guests had arrived and it was time to cut the ribbon.

"You've made my hair come alive!" the Town Mayor told Michael.

The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Christine Mainstone; her husband, Mr Bob Mainstone; the Town Mayor and her husband Cllr David Heasman were later given a complete tour of Wealden House, the highlight of which was showing Mr Heasman where his great uncle, Thomas Heasman, lived within the original grounds in 1916.

Having presented the Town Mayor with a bouquet of flowers, in his speech of thanks, Michael gave his appreciation to David Gaiman, chairman of Weald Inventments, the new owners of Wealden House.

Caribbean music was provided by local residents Mike Ricketts and Roger Nunn. To the Town Mayor's pleasure and surprise, they performed a song specially written for her to thank her for all her hard work and all that she has given the town over the last 12 months.
